Shahat Anwar, along with Muhammad Raf’at, Abdul Basit, Mustafa Ismail, and Abolainain Shoaisha, was among Egyptian Qaris whose styles and recitations had significant influence on Iranian Quran reciters. Shahat Anwar died on January 13, 2007 at the age of 57 after a long period of illness. Born in 1950 in Kafr el-Wazir village in Egypt’s Dakahlia Governorate, he started learning the Quran at a young age. He learned the entire Quran by heart at 8 and when he was ten, his uncle took him to Kafr el-Maqam village to learn Tajweed recitation with Master Seyed Ahmed Fararahi. Shahat Anwar’s beautiful voice and skillful recitation soon took him to prominence in Quranic circles in Egypt. He started reciting the Quran in the Arab country’s radio in 1979. During his lifetime, Shahat Anwar travelled to various Muslim and non-Muslim countries such as Iran, the Persian Gulf Arab countries, France, Brazil, Argentina, Cameroon, and Spain to take part in Quran recitation sessions.
